Historical Poll Rankings
This "poll" is a system devised to historically rank the current 119 Divison I-A football programs from strongest to weakest. In order to do so, College Football Nation came up with a formula using AP end-of-year rankings, all-time records, and national championships to assign points to any given program. The formula takes the average end-of-year AP ranking for the football program over its history of Division I-A play and puts extra emphasis (assigns more points) on important victories such as bowl wins and national championships. The results range from 300 points to 0 points.
The poll is time-sensitive (using weighted results for newer programs), so that programs like Boise State and Marshall are able to compete with older programs like Michigan and Notre Dame.
Below are the poll rankings for the top 25 programs in the history of college football including the number of national championships that program has won.
Also receiving points:
California (71), Washington (71), Maryland (67), Mississippi (67), Clemson (65), Colorado (59), Iowa (51), Syracuse (47), Boise State (43), Stanford (43), SMU (42), Wisconsin (42), TCU (40), Arizona State (39), BYU (39), Duke (39), Purdue (37), North Carolina (36), Navy (35), Houston (34), Missouri (33), West Virginia (31), Virginia Tech (29), Kansas State (26), Marshall (26), Boston College (25), Washington State (24), Baylor (22), Northwestern (22), N.C.
