Suggesting a Play-Off System

There has been plenty of speculation about a playoff system. Here is my suggestion.

Eight team playoff
1. Winner of ACC (automatic)
2. Winner of Big East (automatic)
3. Winner of Big Ten (automatic)
4. Winner of Big XII (automatic)
5. Winner of Pac-10 (automatic)
6. Winner of SEC (automatic)
7-8. Choose two from the winners of the Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt and WAC or a 9-3 or better Independent.

There will be no more than one team from any conference.

Here is how this would work for this year, as per projected finishes.

Automatic Berths:
1. North Carolina (ACC)
2. West Virginia (Big East)
3. Penn State (Big Ten)
4. Texas (Big XII)
5. USC (Pac-10)
6. Florida (SEC)

At Large Berths:
1. Tulsa (C-USA)
2. Central Michigan (MAC)
3. BYU (Mountain West)
4. Troy (Sun Belt)
5. Boise State (WAC)
* There will be no eligible Independents this year.

The committee will likely select Boise State and BYU from the at larges.

The playoff bracket would look as follows:

#1: Florida
#8: BYU

#4: Penn State
#5: North Carolina

#2: Texas
#7: Boise State

#3: USC
#6: West Virginia

Let's also look at how it would have worked last year:

Automatic Berths:
1. Virginia Tech (ACC)
2. West Virginia (Big East)
3. Ohio State (Big Ten)
4. Oklahoma (Big XII)
5. USC (Pac-10)
6. LSU (SEC)

At Large Berths:
1. Tulsa (C-USA)
2. Central Michigan (MAC)
3. BYU (Mountain West)
4. Florida Atlantic (Sun Belt)
5. Hawaii (WAC)
* There were no eligible Independents that year.

The committee would have likely selected Hawaii and BYU from the at larges.

The playoff bracket would have looked as follows:

#1: LSU
#8: BYU

#4: Oklahoma
#5: West Virginia

#2: Ohio State
#7: Hawaii

#3: USC
#6: Virginia Tech

It is rudimentary, but I believe that it would be favorable to all parties. I would suggest that bowl games also be played, with traditional ties for non-qualifying teams.
